Bill Mitchell opens Hellifield StationThe Station - AFTER more than a decade of disuse since being given a half-million pound revamp, Hellifield Station is now open again for business. The station buildings are now preserved following over £500,000 of grants to restore them to their near-original condition. The station represents one of the finest preserved Midland Railway buildings and is totally unique.

Steam tours - Kingfisher run steam tours, 'The Dalesman', up to Carlisle in summer months which start at Hellifield Station. Other rooms in the station are earmarked for an exhibition about the Settle-Carlisle Railway - it's well worth a look.

The station first opened in 1880, but by the 1960s its use was diminishing. Once the site of a large locomotive depot with turntable and coaling stage, the land that used to house these is now lying dormant. However, plans are afoot to rebuild some of these facilities for use in the future.

Hellifield Station Gateway to the Settle-Carlisle line - Hellifield station is at the southern most point of the world famous railway over the Pennines to Carlisle. In recent years the Settle-Carlisle Railway has seen much rebuilding of its stations and relaying of old track to accommodate a growing use of the line. Hellifield is seeing much work in 2007 with extensions to facilities to accommodate longer trains in the future. For railways enthusiasts and the public alike, it is an interesting place to view the many train movements throughout the day. Many West Coast Railway line diversions come this way and go down the branch to Clitheroe for onward transit to Blackburn and Preston.
