The Wessex Set’ is our own rake of special excursion carriages all painted in the Pullman style livery of lined umber and cream. Each carriage is named after an Arthurian legend and is finished to a very high standard inside and out, retaining it’s ‘just overhauled’ appearance. The names of the carriages are displayed outside along the centre of each side and inside by the doors as you enter each carriage. Seats are sequentially numbered in each carriage so that seating allocations are unambiguous.
“Sir Lancelot” and “Melisande” are both Standard class open carriages (no compartments). Seats are in bays of 4, with one bay each side of a central walkway, there are 64 seats in ‘Melisande’ and 62 seats plus two wheelchair spaces in ‘Sir Lancelot’. Each carriage is carpeted throughout and each has two toilets. All seats are covered in our exclusive maroon covers with ‘Excalibur’ sword motifs.
“Pendragon” has a similar seating configuration to the above carriages but also contains the Guards compartment and baggage area so only has 31 seats, there is also one toilet at the end of the coach. The passenger saloon is fully carpeted.
“Red Knight” and “Green Knight” are our First Class and/or Dining saloons each having 48 seats arranged in groups of four to one side of the aisle and two the other. These carriages are fully carpeted with fibre matting in the vestibules. The main saloons are finished off with wood veneers, window curtains and carved pelmet rails. There are two toilets in each carriage.
“Tintagel” is our Buffet car, which can provide hot and cold drinks and light snacks. The Train Stewards are based in here when they are not engaged on their duties elsewhere on the train. This is also the ‘information centre’ for the passengers on the train. ‘Tintagel’ was the prototype buffet for the Advanced Passenger Train (APT) and has been designed as a ‘mini kitchen’ equipped with stainless steel work surfaces, four hobs, a warming oven, two fridges, a microwave, hot water boiler, chilled display cabinet and a soft drinks chiller.
