This train recaptures the atmosphere of the summer seaside specials of yesteryear as it is steam hauled by the magnificent Southern Railway Battle of Britain Pacific No 34067 ‘Tangmere’ and visits the popular destinations of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton with ample time available in both resorts for building sandcastles, a stroll on the promenade and perhaps an ice cream or two.
Departing from Westbury our train is diesel hauled to Kensington Olympia where 34067 ‘Tangmere’ is attached. Then with a full head of steam we take the fast Brighton line past Gatwick Airport to Preston Park, where a short stop for water and photographs will be made. Continuing along the Sussex coastal route through Hove and Worthing to Bognor Regis, it is here we have allowed time for exploration of this most attractive town that was made popular as a watering hole for the 18th century aristocracy and was a favourite of King George V who gave it the title ‘Regis’ in 1928.
Our train is then diesel hauled for the very short journey to Littlehampton, with its busy harbour set at the mouth of the River Arun, again time will be available to perhaps have a walk through the gardens, or a game of pitch n put before we depart with ‘Tangmere’ back in charge as we take the picturesque coastal line passing many places of interest including Lancing College, Arundel Castle, Chichester with its Cathedral and views of the English Channel. We cross several rivers by old wooden bridges and after Havant we cross Farlington Marshes, famous for its bird life. Our homeward route is then through Eastleigh and Winchester for a spirited run through Andover and Basingstoke. At Kensington we say farewell to our sterling steam locomotive and return to Westbury by diesel traction for an arrival around 22.30.
