Saturday 7th June 2008 - 'THE YORKSHIREMAN' to YorkSaturday 7th June 2008 - 'THE YORKSHIREMAN'  to York

Departing from: High Wycombe (06.30) Prices Risborough (06.45) Haddenham & Thame (06.55) Bicester North (07.15) Banbury (07.30) Leamington Spa (07.50) Coventry (08.05) Birmingham Int (08.15) Stafford* (09.00) & Crewe* (09.30)

This very special excursion offers a fabulous day out from local stations in the Chiltern’s with LMS Princess Royal Pacific 6201 “Princess Elizabeth” joining our train at Crewe and hauling us across the high Pennines on a very twisting and taxing route to the historic city of York, where time will be available for visits to the numerous attractions including the National Railway Museum.

Our train is hauled by diesel locomotive to Crewe where the pride of the LMS “Princess Elizabeth” will be waiting with a full head of steam. From here it is a fast run up the West Coast main line before joining the route to Manchester and after passing through Victoria station our engine has to work hard to haul our heavy train up the 1 in 59 Miles Platting bank, we then steam on to Stalybridge where a short stop will be made to replenish the water in the engines tender. Our journey continues through the majestic beauty of the Pennines and the famous 7 mile climb to Diggle at a gradient of 1 in 135 before plunging into the 3 mile long tunnel at the summit. We drop down through Huddersfield and Leeds and then take the fast route through Church Fenton to our destination of York.

Around three hours will be available to visit the multitude of attractions within a short stroll of the station, including the National Railway Museum (the largest in the World) with its brand new “Story of the Flying Scotsman” exhibition and the “York Eye” – a giant wheel that takes you high above the city with magnificent views.  Other places of interest to visit include the Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum and the York Dungeon. After exploring York – which has been the spiritual capital of the North for the last 2,000 years relax back on board as we depart in the late afternoon for our homeward journey again with “Princess Elizabeth” at the head of our train to return us through the Pennines. In the Manchester area we say goodbye to our sterling steam engine and head south behind a more modern form of traction.
